How To Crochet a Tunisian Crochet Simple stitch | Video Tutorial

Tunisian crochet is a special crochet technique that is so versatile and fun to try. The Tunisian crochet simple stitch – abbreviated as TSS – is equivalent to the traditional crochet’s single crochet stitch. In this tutorial, you will learn how to crochet a Tunisian crochet simple stitch.

The Tunisian simple stitch creates a nice mini waffle crochet pattern and a thick finished piece of fabric. The simple stitch is perfect for washcloths and dish pads and is used to create beautiful crochet Afghans.

I created my VANS slippers using the simple stitch. I set out to recreate the checkerboard pattern with the slippers, and when I used single crochet, it didn’t give me the results I expected. When I discovered the Tunisian simple stitch, it was perfect. It creates a flat and solid color change.

Changing colors is a little more challenging with the Tunisian simple stitch; however, once you get it, it is a breeze! I have thrown together a few tips and tricks for beginners to Tunisian crochet and learning the simple stitch.

Tunisian Crochet tips and tricks:

Tunisian Crochet Simple Stitch Tips & Tricks

  • It curls, so don't worry about that until the end. A little blocking will take care of it.
  • Remember to keep a loose tension.
  • Go up a hook size if you find it difficult to get a nice tension.
  • You can create a simple stitch with a regular crochet hook.

I really enjoy this stitch, despite its tendency to curl. It’s been suggested that you block them out when you are finished or spray them with water and let them sit for a couple of days. Although, once I completed my piece and worked the single crochet edging, it flattened. Spraying it with water helps a little too. It’s cotton, dries fast, and flexible. ;).

The washcloth is a simple stitch and I added a crochet surface stitch to add a little color to the border. A surface stitch is a technique where you bring the yarn up through the top of the fabric and work slip stitches (very loosely) throughout the project. Here is an example of a surface stitch – the surface stitch is in the aqua and gold colors below.
