How to Crochet: FPdc2tog – Front Post Double Crochet 2 tog | Easy Video Tutorial for Beginners

Front post stitches can be a challenge for new crocheters.  Don’t be afraid!  They just regular old stitches, but where you place the stitch is the key.  So, the front post stitches are performed just like they sound – you work around the post of a stitch, instead of in the two top loops of the V.

The Front Post Double Crochet 2 Together is abbreviated as FPdc2tog and is a decrease stitch.  This means that you are combining two double crochets over two stitches to create one stitch.  This is helpful when you want a project to curve, or you want to create a textured look.  This technique is also used to create Mandala designs, ribbing for hats and cardigans, or even for scarfs.  If you want to use it as a design aspect and not actually as a decrease stitch, all you need to do is add the stitch back that your removed (example below).

The FPdc2tog is a step up from the Front Post Double Crochet (FPdc) because it creates texture as well as a decrease.  When you crochet any stitch “2 together” you are decreasing by one, which means you are making the garment smaller.  It is a helpful technique to learn for reading patterns.  It sounds like a mouthful, but it is really just the stitch placement that makes it different from a regular double crochet.

Using it as a design element:

Pattern:  FPdc2tog, chain 1. (That will leave you with the same stitch count as you started with).

Using it as a decrease stitch:

Pattern:  Just use the FPdc2tog as a stand alone, this will decrease your stitch count from 2 to 1)

What is your favorite stitch?

What is your favorite type of crochet project?

I recently asked some of my crochet groups what they like to crochet the most and I was surprised to find out it was Afghans!  Then hats & beanies were a close second.

I haven’t delved into the world of Afghans very often, but I absolutely love creating C2C graphs.  I only wish I had more time to design, and create ALL my patterns for graphs.  Soon I will be uploaded a bunch of C2C graphs.

What do you want my next pattern to be?  Leave a comment below and I’ll do my best to create something fun for you to make!
