How to Crochet: Open Ridge Stitch | Video Tutorial for Beginners | Stitch Explorer Series

The stitch explorer series is a series of stitch tutorial videos I am creating to share with my students, and everyone on the interwebs! You can come back to this link and explore the rest of the stitches, there is so much to learn!

This is the second of five stitches we are going to learn leading up to creating the coolest 5 stitch project ever! The first stitch to learn is the alternating spike stitch, and you can check that out that tutorial by clicking here.

In the meantime, let’s learn the Open Ridge stitch…

This stitch uses two basic stitches in a two row repeat. The half double crochet & the single crochet. The pattern goes as follows:

+ Abbreviations

scsingle crochet
hdchalf double crochet
skskip
chchain
yoyarn over
st(s)stitch(es)

+ Stitch Guide:

sc – single crochet

insert hook in indicated st, yo, draw up a loop, yo draw through both loops on hook.

hdc – half double crochet

yo, insert hook in indicated st, yo, draw up a loop, yo, draw through all three loops on hook.

Pattern:

Chain an even number of chains.

Row 1:

sc 1 in 2nd chain from hook, and in each chain across. ch 1, turn.

note for row 2: there are two skips – there is a skip at the beginning of the row and another skip within the *repeat* – I messed this up when I first worked this pattern and had to frog it. Then I realized I only skipped one stitch.

Row 2:

sk first sc, *sk 1 sc, hdc 1 in next st, hdc 1 in space between last 2 sts worked* – repeat from * to *, ending with 1 hdc in ch 1. ch 1, turn.

Row 3 :

sk first hdc, sc 1 in back loop of each hdc, ending with 1 sc in ch 1. ch 1, turn.

Rows 4 – X:

Repeat rows 2 & 3 until you reach the desired height for your project.

If you are a visual learner, like I know I am, the video tutorial is below. Please take a moment to subscribe to my channel if you’d like to see all the stitch explorer videos. I’ll be premiering one every Saturday – forever (at least that’s the plan)! You can click on the subscribe button below 🙂

What should I make with the Open Ridge Stitch?

This is a great stitch to use for making just about anything from scarves to cardigans. It has a nice open work to it, so you’d want to use it for something that doesn’t need to be too warm, because air will flow through it quite easily.

I hope you enjoy this tutorial, and if you have any questions or comments, please leave them below, I would love to talk crochet!
