Crochet Summer Flower Motif | Crochet Video Tutorial for Beginners | Saturday Stitch Explorers

Welcome to Saturday Stitch Explorers! Hope everyone is having a great week! This weeks “stitch” is actually a motif. What is a motif? A motif is a stand alone crocheted decorative piece you can sew together to create a blanket, a top, table runner, scarf, you name it! Motifs are great because you can take one motif and make it unique by changing the colors. Here is an example of the sunflower motif that I changed up the hook size and yarn to create a giant afghan block. It’s a free pattern too ;).

Another example of a motifs from a fellow blogger over at Mezzamay. You can see that motifs can be created from hexagons, squares, circles or even triangles.

There are various ways to connect motifs too. You can crochet them together using slip stitches, single crochets, or even double crochets. You can also sew them together for a cleaner look.

It’s summertime, and I thought it would be nice to create a stitch tutorial for more open-work, cool breezy, summer-y stitches you can use to create a cute top. I may make a full top with this, but have so much on my plate right now, I’ll leave it up to you!

I used Scheepjes Stone-Washed for this sample because I really love the colors and the muted look because they mix the main color with a bit of white.

This is a great motif for a beginner because it uses basic stitches and ups the game a bit by using a double crochet 4 & double crochet 5 together. I’ll cover those in the video tutorial if you have trouble with them.

I hope you enjoy this stitch! Happy Crocheting!

Complete video tutorial at bottom of post – for all the visual learners out there.

stdc – starting double crochet

see Moogly’s video tutorial for this one, it takes some practice, link is below. you don’t have to use this stitch, you can work a chain too ;).

Pattern:

For this tutorial I used Scheepjes Stone-Washed in 833 (yellow), 809 (gold), 820 (pink), and 819 (light green) with a 4 mm hook.

Magic Circle, ch 2 (or work a standing double crochet abbreviated as stdc)

notes:

  • if you work a stdc, it counts as a st, if not, ch does not count as st.
  • 1st st is made in same as join, unless otherwise noted.
  • Joins are made with sl st into first st of round, unless otherwise indicated.
  • Join new colors with sl st, when making joins at end of round.

Rnd 1 (C1):  dc 15 into magic circle.  Joincut C1.  (15)

Tip for Rnd 2: You want to create 32 single crochet’s around. Normally, we would work 2 sc per 1 sc from the previous round (15), which would give us 30 sc. You want to add two more, however, because we are working between the double crochet’s, it can be tricky to get to that point. I’ve written out a way for you below, but you’re welcome to make your increases wherever you’d like on the round.

Rnd 2 (C2)ch 1sc 2 in each stitch around, add two extra single crochet’s spaced evenly to bring your stitch count to 32. sl st join with C3cut C2.  (32)

Rnd 3 (C3)ch 5 (or starting dc), dtr4tog (blo) starting in same as ch.  *ch 9, dtr5tog (blo) (inserting hook in same place as last insertion, then over next 4 sts – blo)* – rep *…* 7 more times.  ch 9Join in top of dtr4tog from beg of rnd with C4Cut C3.  (8 petals, 8 ch 9’s)

Rnd 4 (C4)ch 1, *sc 9 in ch 9 sp* – rep *…* in each ch 9 space around.  Join, I used an invisible join for the last join.

Congratulations! You’re finished!
