Hydra Spa Set | Free Crochet Pattern by Stardust Gold Crochet

The inspiration for the Hydra Spa Set is the scrubby yarn by Red Heart! 😍 I saw this yarn at Micheal’s a few months ago, and thought hmmmmmm….this is really cool! Of course, I had to try it out and after my friend Lidewij of Lilinette Crochet created a cool stitch called the 🌸 Lotus Bud Stitch, I loved it so much, I wanted to use it in my own spa set creation.

It’s also pretty hot now, and I thought hmmmmm…what can I crochet that is not a hat, scarf, or top? Right?

A bath set was the perfect solution and I’m so excited to be releasing this pattern for free today!

This pattern is my first published pattern! It was in the September issue #66 of Happily Hooked Magazine. You can get the issue here on Ravelry. 😃

A little bit about the yarn…

Working with this yarn is a bit of a challenge, because it is difficult to see the stitches, but after a few tries, it ends up working out okay. Here’s a few tips for working with Red Heart Scrubby yarn:

  • It’s hard to count stitches, so keep your measuring tape handy to get the right size. :).
  • Feel it! I found feeling for the stitches helps.
  • This yarn also gets thick and thin in various spots, so make sure you’re working through both top loops of the stitches.
  • Don’t fret. The pattern is so easy to follow, and the stitch count or gauge is not *that* important because sizing doesn’t matter here.

These tips should help you work with the Red Heart Scrubby Yarn. Of course you can use another 3 or 4 weight yarn, or complete the Hydra Spa Set completely in I Love This Cotton, or another similar cotton yarn. I recommend cotton for this set because it’s a natural fiber and softer on the skin.

I hope you enjoy this pattern!

Yarn subs…

I Love This Cotton Sub:  Lilly Sugar N’ Cream Solids, medium weight #4 yarn (100% cotton, 120 yds/109 m per 2.5 oz/70.9 g skein)

Scrubby Sub:  Lily Sugar ’n Cream Scrub Off Yarn, medium weight #4 yarn (100% cotton, 106 yds/97 m per 2.6 oz/75g per skein)

The best place to check for other yarn substitutes is the Yarn Sub website here.

A little note about how this pattern is written…

Hand Scrubby:

The hand scrubby is worked in rows, in one long piece, with a yarn change midway. When you finish the rows, you will work a border, then fold it along the center-line and continue a border to join the pieces together. The handle is worked last.

Back Scrubby:

The back scrubby is worked in rows, in one long piece, then you’ll create a border and the handles.

Face Scrubby:

The face scrubby is worked in two pieces, in the round. The pieces are joined and then the handle is created.

Here is one from my testers! Thank you to all the testers, I really appreciate you working through this pattern with me. Forever grateful 💗 💖 💞

Gauge:

14 sc x 17 rows = 4”/10 cm (using scrubby yarn)

Adjust hook size if necessary, to obtain gauge.

This yarn is hard to see the stitches, I recommend “feeling for them” and counting carefully.

  • Pattern is written in three sections: the face scrubby (worked in the round), the back scrubby (worked in rows), the body scrubby (worked in rows).
  • Joins for face scrubby:  are made with sl st into 1st st of round, unless otherwise noted.
  • 1st st of ea round/row is made in same as ch/t-ch, unless otherwise noted.

Tips:  Feel for your stitches, and keep a good count because this yarn is difficult to see the stitches 🙃

Round 1:  Ch 2, dc 12 into ring, join – 12 dc.

Round 2:  Ch 2, dc 2 in ea st, join – 24 dc.

Round 3:  Ch 1, sc 1 in ea st around, join – 24 sc.  Cut, tie off, weave in tails.

Round 3:  Ch 2, turn, lbs 1 in ea st, inc by 1 every 5th st – 24 lbs.

note: Don’t join round 3 yet.  We are going to join the pieces as we complete the round join.  To join pieces, lay face scrubby 1 on top of face scrubby 2.  insert hook through any st on face scrubby 1 first, then complete the sl st through side 2, working through 1st st of round 3, like a normal round join, then…

Joining round:  Ch 1, turn, sc 1 in ea st around, working through both pieces – 24 sc

Cut, tie off, weave in all tails.

Row 2:  Ch 1, sc 1 in same as join, turn, (working back down the chain) sc 1 in ea chain, join with sl st in 2nd sc of 3 sc created from R1.  sl st in next sc – 10 sc, 1 sl st.

Row 3:  Sc 1 in ea sc working back down to other side, join in next sc on scrubby with sl st – 10 sc, 1 sl st. Cut, tie off, and weave in all tails.

Back Scrubby:

with MC, fsc 16.

Row 1:  Ch 1, turn, sc 1 in ea fsc across – 16 sc.

Row 2 – 61:  Repeat row 1 – 16 sc, change to CC.

Border:

CC:  Ch 2, turn, hdc 1 (in same as ch 2), lbs 1 in ea of next 14 sts, hdc 3 in last st.  Working down the side, sc 1 in side of ea row, hdc 3 in corner.  Keep working around, lbs 1 in bottom of ea of next 14 fsc, hdc 3 in corner st.  sc 1 in ea side of row until you reach beg of round.  hdc 2 in same st as 1st hdc of round.  Join with sl st in 1st hdc, don’t cut yarn – 12 hdc, 28 lbs, 122 sc.

Creating the Handles:

Handle #1:

continue with CC

Row 1:  Ch 1, sc 1 in same as join, sc 1 in next st – 2 sc.

Row 2:  Ch 1, turn, sc 1 in ea st – 2 sc.

Row 3 – 26:  Repeat row 2 – 2 sc.  Measures appx. 7” (17cm).

Cut and leave a long tail for sewing.  Sew to other side of scrubby, working into the hdc’s of corner.

Handle #2:

On opposite side of scrubby, attach CC in center hdc of the 3 hdc in corner, then…

Row 1:  Ch 1, sc 1 in same st as join, sc 1 in next st – 2 sc.

Row 2 – 26:  Repeat row 2 & joining instructions from handle #1.  Fasten off, weave in tails.

with MC, fsc 18.

Row 1:  Ch 1, turn, sc 1 in ea st across – 18 sc.

Row 25:  Repeat row 1.

Row 26:  Ch 2, turn, *lbs 1, sc 1* – rep *…* across – 9 lbs, 9 sc.

note:  depending on your tension, you may need to crochet more than 43 rows to make CC and MC sections match in height, I noted that in parentheses below, despite how many rows you work (43, 44, or 45), the remainder of the pattern is the same.

Row 27 – 43 (44, 45):  Repeat row 26.  CC should measure around 7” (17cm) – 9 lbs, 9 sc.

Row 44 (45, 46):  Ch 1, turn, sc 1 in ea st across, sc 2 in same as last sc – 20 sc.

note:  Do not cut yarn.  Turn, bring up the bottom left hand corner, and match up corner 3 sc.  Turn, making sure 3 sc in both end corners line up, join pieces together with a sl st, inserting hook first through join st, then into 1st sc after 3 sc on the corner of back piece.  Turn, working down left side.  The following sts work through both pieces, until noted otherwise.

Row 2:  ch 1, sc 1 in ea of next 25 sts, sc 3 in corner, sc 18 across bottom (still working through both pieces), sc 3 in corner, sc 1 in ea of next 25 sts.  Work on MC side only, sc 1 in ea of next 16 sts, join with sl st into 1st sc of round, don’t cut yarn – 90 sc.

Top of Body Scrubby:

Row 1:  Ch 1, turn, skip join st, then sc 1 in of next 16 sts – 16 sc.

Row 2:  Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc 1 in ea of next 12 sc, sc2tog – 14 sc.

Row 3:  Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc 1 in ea of next 10 sc, sc2tog – 12 sc.

Row 4:  Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc 1 in ea of next 2 sc, ch 4, skip 4, sc 1 in ea of next 2 sc, sc2tog – 10 sc.

Row 5:  Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc 1 in next sc, sc 4 around ch 4 sp, sc 1 in next sc, sc2tog – 8 sc.

Row 6:  Ch 1, turn, sc2tog, sc 1 in ea of next 4 sc, sc2tog – 6 sc.
