Crochet Coin Purse Tutorial | Lilac Dreams Coin purse | Crochet Quickies

The Lilac Dreams crochet coin purse pattern is here! 😁 I really enjoyed making this simple crochet coin purse pattern and loved 😻 learning how to attach a purse frame to a project (something I never tried before.) If you haven’t figured it out yet, I love Scheepjes yarn. The colors are just beautiful, and soft.

They have an XL version (a slightly heavier than 4 weight – although it is listed as a 4 weight yarn) of their famous stone-washed line, which I use in quite a few patterns.

One in particular is the summer solstice motifs, which I will be releasing as a free pattern soon (can’t wait!).

It’s all About the Yarn…

I used Scheepjes Stone-Washed for this pattern lilac quartz. They have a wide variety of colors to choose from…they are just beautiful.

The softness comes from the yarn composition – 70% cotton and 30% acrylic.

+ Skill Level:

Beginner

If you decide to create this using a different yarn, I suggest you use a WPI method to determine the size. Scheepjes Stone-Washed XL has a WPI of 12 wraps per inch.

+ Materials

Hook Size:

  • Hook Size: 4.5 mm (US G)
  • Scissors
  • Darning Needle

These purse frame toppers are in limited supply now, however, I found some really cute designs on Etsy (these are affiliate links)

Sheepjes Stone-Washed XL – I am not currently an affiliate of Sheepjes – I just absolutely love this yarn.

fsc – foundation single crochet

(2 fsc created).

TSS – Tunisian simple stitch

This stitch contains two actions a forward pass, which is pulling up loops, and a reverse pass, which works the loops off the hook. Both actions create 1 row.

FwdP – *insert hook in indicated stitch, yo, pull up a loop – repeat from * across.

RvsP – do not turn, yo, pull through one loop, *yo, pull through 2 loops – repeat from * to beginning of row – 1 TSS row completed.

pineapple – puffy pineapple stitch

yo, insert hook in indicated stitch, *yo draw up a loop to level of your hook*, yo, insert hook in same stitch – repeat from * to *, (5 loops on hook), yo, draw through 4 loops, yo, draw through last two loops on hook – 1 pineapple stitch created.

+ Pattern Notes

  • Chains do not count as stitches.
  • 1st stitch of each row is made in the base of the turning chain, unless otherwise indicated.
  • This pattern contains a Tunisian crochet simple stitch (TSS), this is the basic Tunisian stitch. If you have trouble reading or understanding the pattern, please refer to the Lilac Dreams Crochet Coin Purse Video Tutorial.
  • Tension is only moderately important, make sure your WPI’s are similar if you use a different yarn – Scheepjes Stone-Washed XL is 12 WPI.

+  Instructions

The Lilac Dreams Crochet Coin Purse is created by making two panels, sewing them together, and attaching a coin purse frame (easy!) 😀.

+ Pattern

with 4.5 mm hook and 4 weight yarn…fsc 13.

Alternatively, you can chain 13 + 1, then create 1 row of single crochet starting in the second chain from the hook. If you decide to use a chain instead of foundation single crochet, skip Row 1 below and begin Row 2.

Make 2:

Row 1: Ch 1, turn, sc in each stitch across – 13 sc.

Row 2: Ch 2, turn, pineapple stitch in next 12 sc, dc in last sc – 12 pineapple sts, 1 dc.

Note: Row 3 is a Tunisian simple stitch – you do not need a special hook, just your regular crochet hook. However, if you use an ergonomic hook, you may need to switch it out for a regular non-ergonomic hook for this row because some ergonomic hooks have a very short working area. I used an ergonomic hook and didn’t need to switch out. I write out the stitch below, but you can also find it in the stitch guide above.

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, TSS FwdP (*insert hook in BLO of next, yo, pull up a loop, repeat from * in each sc across – 14 loops on hook), TSS RvsP (yo, pull through 1st loop, **yo, pull through 2 toops, repeat from ** back until there is one loop left on hook) – 13 TSS.

Row 4: (do not turn), ch 1, sc into the center of the TSS vertical bars (see image below) in each stitch across – 13 sc.

single crochet placements

Rows 5, 6, 7: Repeat row 2, 3 & 4.

Decrease Rows:

Row 8: Ch 2, turn, skip 1st st, pineapple stitch in next 10 sts, skip 1 stitch, hdc in last stitch – 10 pineapple stitches, 1 hdc.

Row 9: Ch 1, turn, skip 1st st, TSS (BLO) in next 8 sts, skip 1 st, TSS (BLO) in last st, RvsP as normal – 9 TSS.

Row 10: (Do not turn), ch 1, sc between each TSS across – 9 sc.

Row 11: Ch 2, turn, skip 1st st, pineapple stitch in next 6 stitches, skip 1 st, sc in last stitch – 6 pineapple sts, 1 sc.

+ Assembly:

  • Decide which side you’d like as right side (RS).
  • Place right sides together, and sew along outside leaving rows 8 – 11 untouched and open.

Attaching the Purse Frame

  • After sewing, turn the purse RS out.
  • Open the purse frame and line the bottom joint with bottom of row 8.
  • Please see this video timestamp 13:37 to see how to attach the purse frame.

Here you can see how to assemble:

After you come through the back, bring your needle back through the next hole, and up to the front of your work. Then work a running type stitch, working from front to back, and back to front. If you need more of a visual for this, please check out the tutorial video at the bottom of the page.

I hope you enjoyed making this cute crochet coin purse.

    • I’ve been trying to find out about this too. Did you figure it out? I’ve been looking since early this morning but see no one responding anywhere I’ve looked, not on the main page for the hop, not here or on either facebook page.
