SKILL LEVEL: ADVANCED BEGINNER (because there are color changes)

YARN WEIGHT: Any 4 weight (worsted) yarn.

For this pattern I mixed a few different yarns, mostly because I didn’t have all the colors I wanted in my stash.  So go ahead and grab any 4-weight yarn and you’ll be good to go!

All About the Yarn…

I went with a few different yarns: (links below in suggested yarn)

Impeccable Yarn by Loops & Threads (Can be found at Michael’s) (aff link)

  • Cherry (Red – Mushroom cap)
  • Aqua (Blue – Sky)
  • White (Clouds & Mushroom Dots)
  • Jade (Green – Grass)
  • Soft Taupe (Lt Brown – Mushroom Stems)

Lion Brand Heartland (aff link)

  • Black Canyon (Brim)

Tips for Waistcoat Stitch and Color Change Projects

Here are a few simple tips that will keep your project looking nice and neat.

  • Tension – tension is very important using this stitch.  Keep it loose.
  • You can use a smaller hook for the brim (optional) – This keeps the brim looking neat.
  • Use your hook – use the hook to “hook” the right leg of the single crochet to open up the stitch (this is why we crochet it loose) and will let your hook go in easier.

What is the Waistcoat Stitch?

Waistcoat Stitch is so simple!  It’s a single crochet stitch, but your hook placement is what makes it different.  Place your hook through the center of the V legs in the single crochet stitch instead of the top two loops. That’s it!  Please see the EASY MUSHROOM BEANIE VIDEO TUTORIAL to learn this easy crochet technique.

CUTE MUSHROOM BEANIE CROCHET PATTERN:

Sizing TIPS:

  • The written pattern is made for a head that measures 19 – 23” around.  If you want to create a child size hat – the mushroom repeat for adult size is 15 stitches wide and repeats 5 times.
  • You can knock off one of the repeats to create a brim that is 60 rows wide and crochet 4 repeats of the mushroom graph.
  • Increase or decrease hook size to achieve various sizes too, or use a 3 weight yarn instead of a 4 weight yarn to achieve the same effect.

Brim:

With (C1) In Black, start with a 4.5 mm hook.

Rows:

  1. Ch 9, sc in 2nd chain from hook and each chain across (8 sc)
  2. Ch 1, turn, sc in 1st stitch, sc (BLO) in next 6, sc in last stitch (8 sc)
  3. Repeat Row 2 until you have 75 rows (will fit adult / teen size head 19 – 23”)

Join the short ends by using a slip stitch through BLO of front piece and FLO of back piece (see video for help) – do not cut the yarn.

Turn inside out so the seam is inside .

Top of Beanie:

Each repeat is 15 stitches wideYou’ll do 5 repeats of the mushroom graph, so once you finish stitch 15, you’ll jump back to stitch 1 and keep crocheting around.

Top part is worked in the round, marking the first stitch of each round.

Rounds:

  1. Ch 1, sc in each end of the row around, creating 75 scJoin with C2 (green) in first sc (75 sc)
  2. Begin working the graph (below) in the waistcoat stitch, marking the first stitch of each round

Complete the graph below – each repeat is 15 stitches wide, then cinch and sew top together using a running stitch or whip stitch.

Top it with your favorite pom pom or wear it as is!
