Patchwork Mystery CAL | #11 | Phoenix Afghan Square

Hi everyone!  Welcome to Stardust Gold Crochet!  Week 11 is here, and we are almost finished with the Patchwork Mystery CAL!  Just two more weeks to go, so exciting!  The Phoenix Square is one of 12 afghan blocks featured in the Patchwork Mystery Crochet Along.

Whether you are new to the crochet along, or have been here since the beginning, welcome to week 11, I hope you enjoy creating this square!  If you are unfamiliar with the patchwork mystery CAL, it is a collaboration project organized by Anastasia Smith of Journey Chanel Design, combining the talents of 12 individual designers.  I am so honored to be a part of this fun project.  Thanks Joey & Anastasia for including me 😊.

Week 11: The Phoenix Square

The Phoenix Square combines basic and a few more advanced stitches, but don’t fret, there is a complete video tutorial to help you work through it that I will release on Monday, June 24th around 5:30 pm CST.

There are also some photos below to help you work through the pattern.  The Ravelry PDF is also available as a neat written companion you can download for free, link is below.  While you’re there, show some <3 and send some hearts by adding it to your favorites.

A little about me:

If you are new to Stardust Gold Crochet, welcome and I’m so happy you are here!  My name is Tasha Margette Reynolds, although I design under my first and middle name Tasha Margette 😊.  I live in Memphis, Tennessee, a native Californian, and bounced around a bit between Florida & California most of my life.

I am a mother to one grown daughter, a grandson (I’m a young gamma!), and two fur babies (BeeBee & Buddy).  Although we are not married, my boyfriend and I will be celebrating 10 years in October!  Woot!  I have a bachelor of science in environmental science and an almost complete graduate certificate in bioinformatics (science nerd here).  When I am not crocheting, you can find me at the skate park with my family, enjoying the park, or gardening, but seriously, I’m mostly crocheting. lol.

I started crocheting again in 2016, while I was finishing out my B.S.E.V.S., while simultaneously caring for my elderly father, which left us both house-bound.  He was very sick with dementia, Alzheimer, and lung cancer to the point where he could not be left alone (or he would set the house on fire! lol).  I spent a total of 8 years caring for him, but the last year was by far the hardest.  I couldn’t work, so I picked up my grandmother’s (his mother) Margaret’s’ crochet hooks and starting making again.  I loved it so much and started getting requests from friends, so I started writing my patterns down.  I had no idea it would lead to where I am now and it became my new obsession.  It has truly changed my life and I felt compelled to help younger generations learn through inspiration and creating, and here we are! <3

Connect with me!

I am basically all over the socials.  I would love to see you in my personal Facebook group called Stardust Gold Crochet & Friends or connect with me through my Facebook page, Stardust Gold Crochet.  I am very active on all platforms, but mostly Facebook. I also started a podcast, so we can get to know each other better and talk about crochet :). The first 2 are here.

About the Phoenix Afghan Square:

A little about this square. Anastasia asked us to create a square that reflected our personal crochet style. I wanted to create a challenging square that was colorful, and looked good in both full color and as a solid. I thought the star center would be great because I love the cosmos, hence Stardust Gold Crochet. 🙂

Phoenix is a minor constellation in the southern sky. Named after the mythical phoenix, it was first depicted on a celestial atlas by Johann Bayer in his 1603 Uranometria. The French explorer and astronomer Nicolas Louis de Lacaille charted the brighter stars and gave their Bayer designations in 1756

I live in the south now, and though it fitting for this star project and I like to name my designs after constellations or stars. I also feel like a phoenix rising from the ashes sometimes…I know we’ve all been there.

This square is worked using basic stitches, single crochet, double crochet, as well as a few intermediate to advanced techniques like front post, puff stitches, and overlay crochet.  Overlay crochet is a technique where you work a front post stitch into a raised stitch or loop from one to several rows down.  It creates wonderful texture and color plays.  Overlay is one of those techniques that once you learn it, you will want to head over and get *all* the mandala patterns on the market. lol.  I know I did. :D.

Below, you will find the full written pattern.  The PDF is also free on Ravelry, you can find that link here.

The video tutorial is available here.
