Are you a crochet designer? | Are you a beginner who wants to learn to create your own designs? | Do you love crochet, but not good at reading patterns? | Do you want to create a design without worrying about a pattern and just wing it!
This is the calculator for you.
As a designer, I love to create patterns from scratch. This takes a lot of trial and error for sure, but a few years ago I purchased the Crochet Stitch Bible for stitch inspiration and learn new, fun stitches.
I came across an issue. The good old guessing game. How many chains do I need to make a scarf that’s 64″ long. The stitch I choose requires multiples of 4 + 3 with a foundation chain of 4 + 6. Soooo, now what? Break out the multiples calculator, add 6, and guess how long it will be? Make a sample chain, measure and guess?
What a pain right?
All this wonder inspired me to create another calculator! Initially I created it to help me with designing, but of course, I thought what a wonderful thing it would be to share it with my crochet community. 😍
This calculator will let you pick a stitch – any stitch you want, and enter how big you want your project to be – then enter the stitch multiples, the extra turning chains, and the foundation chain requirements, and it spits out how many chains you need to start.
If you love crochet calculators, I created another for you! As a designer, they really help shorten prep time for a project! Even if you’re not a designer, but want to know how big a project will be before you spend all the time and money, you’ll love these tools.
Recently I created an awesome calculator that helps determine the size your C2C blanket will be based on your personal crochet style, using the yarn and hook size of your choice – you can bookmark that one here: C2C blanket size calculator.
How does this work?
I’ve laid out steps below to help you learn how to use it. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll come back again and again.
You can save this page to your browser favorites and come back anytime you’d like!
I hope you enjoy using these crochet design tools. Feel free to PIN or share this at will! Want to connect on Pinterest? Follow my boards below :).
Do you wish you had a certain calculator? Leave me a comment below, let me know what you’d like and I’ll do my best to create one for you. Thanks for supporting Stardust Gold Crochet!
Happy Crocheting,
Ok, so what if I am using 165 chains (to make a tube top of my dress) and I need to have 40 rows, I’ve been trying to learn that and I’m still confused. I’m making my design and I am still thinking
Ps, I’m trying to find what 40 rows are in inches so I can find out the guage
Hi this stitch calculater is good if you can understand it but i still do not get it if i made a chain of a hundred how do i measure for adding a turning chain
What kind of project are you working? This calculator is for using stitch multiples. Like for instance if the patterns says “stitch uses multiples of 6 + 2” and then it spits out how many chains you need to make to start. If you are doing a turning chain, it doesn’t really count into the width of your project.
Sorry these directions didnโt make sence to me, all I need is how many chains to make 60โ wide by 70โ long, I have only 2 stitches in the pattern. Can you help with this? There are 4 stitches to one inch.
Hi Norma,
You need to input your stitch pattern multiples. If you send me your info, I will input it for you. Does that help?
Bummer, it seems neither stitch calculator link is working?? Neither this one, or the one for the C2C
I do not see the link to the calculator
I can not see a link under the Calculator picture. Can you tell me how to see the link. Do I need to be on a computer? Thank you
I can’t find the calculator ๐
no link for chain calculator
Looks like the page needs to be opened up in Chrome for it to show on the blog page. I opened it up in Microsoft Edge and it didn’t show anything but when I opened it up in Chrome it was towards the bottom of her blog post.
If the plugin is updated, it should open in chrome just fine, but I will check again ๐ Thanks for letting me know
You’re right, I just checked chrome again and it’s not working. Hmmmmmm. This is getting frustrating!
I updated it. Will you let me know if it is working for you now?
Wow I did not do the calculations like you said but copied and pasted the Multiple of — and that will be all I need. I got the multiples of 3 last week then looked you up again and found this. Thank you it will be a big help.
The only link identified on here is for a blanket calculator earlier in this post, and will only link to a ‘private’ site. Not much help really. Sadly.
Hey Val, my plugin was broken, but it is fixed now. Try it again. Hope it helps.
I’m sorry, I do not see a Crochet Stitch Calculator or the instructions, nor was I able to locate a link for another page.Thank you for any help you can provide.I’m trying out different stitches for a charity project and the swatches all need to be the same size.

Crochet needle #6, DK Light Acrylic yarn. Multiples of 6 + 3 and 3 for turning. She chains 69, turns, chains 3. To go up 2 sizes, I need to know how many stitches to chain. Can you help me? Thank you!!!! Jackie Jackie Holderbein
Can you post a video explaining how to use the calculator? I donโt understand the written instructions at all.
