French Square | Crochet Video Tutorial for Beginners | Stitch Explorers Series

Wow! 😮 I think I’m in love 😍 with this French Square 🤗.  Welcome everyone to the Saturday Stitch Explorers series!  This weeks stitch is (you guessed it), the French Square.

This really is a beauty and only 3 rounds!  What?  You heard right.  The French Square is another motif pattern like the flower 🌸 from a couple of weeks ago.  These squares can be linked together to create tops, purses, blankets, and 🧣 scarves.  Just about anything you can think of really.

If you can chain, single crochet, double, bobble and treble, you’re good to go!

  • Pattern worked in rounds.

+ Pattern:

For this tutorial I used I Scheepjes Stone Washed (DK) in color 818 and a 4.5 mm hook. It seems like this is out of stock in a lot of places, but here is the like for Jimmy Bean too.

To start, create a magic circle or chain 6, and join ch with sl st, then work round 1 into the circle.

Round 1:  ch 4, (dc 1 into ring, ch 1) 11 times, sl st in 3rd ch of ch 4 from beginning of round.

Round 2:  sl st in next ch, ch 2, hdc3-cl in same ch, ch 2, hdc4-cl in next ch 1 sp, ch 3, *tr 1 in next dc, ch 3, (hdc4-cl in next ch 1 sp, ch 2) two times, hdc4-cl in next ch 1 sp, ch 3* repeat *…* two more times, then tr 1 in next dc, ch 3, hdc4-cl in next ch 1 sp, ch 2, sl st in top of hdc3-cl from beg.

Round 3:  ch 1, *sc 1 in top of hdc3-cl, 5-picot, ch 2, skip [ch 2, 1 cluster], dc 5 in next ch 3 sp, ch 1, tr 1 in next tr, 3-Picot, ch 1, dc 5 in next ch 3 sp, ch 2, skip [1 cluster and ch 2]*, rep *…* 3 more times, sl st in first sc of round, fasten off.

Congratulations! You’re finished!

French Stitch Complete Video Tutorial:

I messed up a few times in this video (sorry you guys!) so I recommend referring to the written pattern above –

However, I can tell you that on Round 1, the hdc3 and 4 clusters – you should pull through all but two loops, then yo, and pull through the remaining loops. On Round 3, you should ch 1 before the treble stitches, and after the 3-picot. I was having quite the bad day today (fibro pain) :/. Booooo.

What can I make with the French Square?

This is a motif, so you can create a lot of fun project with them. Create them using different colors to create a scarf, a table cloth, purses, headbands, blankets, or just about anything for the home, including pillow covers <3.

I hope you enjoy this tutorial, and if you have any questions or comments, please leave them below, I would love to talk crochet!
