Retro Flower Crochet Hexagon Pattern w/ Heart Petals (FREE)

I was so inspired to design a pattern for Valentine’s Day and this cute crochet hexagon is PERFECT. This Retro Flower Crochet Hexagon (with flower heart petals!) will make a perfect blanket or bag. (I am making a bag with mine)

Inspiration Behind the Pattern

Well, of course it’s almost Valentine’s Day – so there’s that!

Here’s what happened. I’ve been so inspired lately by squares of all sorts and retro crochet / vintage 1940’s crochet patterns and Japanese crochet motifs.

There I was, flipping through a book of old japanese crochet patterns and came across a hexagon open mesh pattern that had what looked like hearts in it! I was hooked. I had to create a hexagon with hearts.

At first, it didn’t turn out how I expected, so I ripped it back about 10 times before landing on the final version. Although, I did create a completely different join process (so keep an eye out for that in the instructions below).

The original and traditional join method didn’t quite work out because it leaves a less solid heart. I’m so excited and happy on how it turned out! The Retro Flower Hexagon Bag will be released this week! So keep an eye out for that one too.

What Can I Make With This Crochet Pattern?

Well you can make crochet blankets, crochet bags, and if you’re feeling a little squirrelly, you can even put together a cardigan or pillow!

I am making a bag and that Retro Hearts Hexagon Crochet Bag assembly pattern will be ready on Saturday! Oh, I’m so excited because it’s just sooooo cute!

Here is a sneak peek! Meanwhile, I will update this post with the link to the assembly pattern soon.

Scheepjes Stone Washed Colors

  • Dark Center = Boulder Opal
  • Green = Peridot
  • Cream = Axinite
  • Yellow = Citrine (I’m going to make a few with a yellow center to the daisy)

All About the Yarn…

I went with Paintbox Yarns Simply Chunky yarn for my cute Hearts Hexi Square because it creates such a large hexagon making it easy to create a blanket fast! The colors are also amazing.

Yarn Subs:  Any worsted or bulky yarn will work great.  Here are a few similar yarns to try out in replacement of Paintbox:

    • LOL! Thanks! Yes, I just wanted to get it perfect. That’s just a part of the design process for me. I have so many designs just sitting there unfinished because I’ve given up on them. This one I didn’t give up on. Although I would like the holes above the hearts peak to be solid, there wasn’t a way to do it without ruining the hexagon shape. So I just kept the holes.
