For this pattern I used two wools – the main color (mc) – is by Lion Brand Wool Ease in worsted weight and the other is a Hobby Lobby Yarn called I Love This Wool in Grey.  So go ahead and grab any 4-weight yarn and you’ll be good to go!

All About the Yarn…

I went with a few different yarns: (links below in suggested yarn)

Tips for Center Single Crochet & Color Change Projects

Here are a few simple tips that will keep your project looking nice and neat.

  • Tension – tension is very important using this stitch.  Keep it loose.
  • You can use a smaller hook for the brim (optional) – This keeps the brim looking neat.
  • Use your hook – use the hook to “hook” the right leg of the single crochet to open up the stitch (this is why we crochet it loose) and will let your hook go in easier.

What is the Waistcoat (center Single Crochet) Stitch?

Waistcoat Stitch is so simple!  It’s a single crochet stitch, but your hook placement is what makes it different.  Place your hook through the center of the V legs in the single crochet stitch instead of the top two loops. That’s it!

This beanie doesn’t take a lot of yarn at all.  The most dominant color is white (mc) and it uses less than ¾ of a skein.

SNOWBOUND BEANIE

PATTERN:

Gauge:

12 sts wide x 21 rows tall (4″ x 4″ – 10 x 10 cm)

Sizing TIPS:

  • The written pattern is made for a head that measures 19 – 23” around.  If you want to create a child size hat – the repeat for adult size is 10 stitches wide and repeats 6 times using 6.5 mm hook
  • Adult Modifications: You can modify the adult size by using a 5 or 5.5 mm hook & repeat 7 times to make it larger.
  • Child Modifications: You can modify the child size by using a 5 or 5.5 mm hook & repeat 5 times or 4 times for a toddler/baby.
  • Increase or decrease hook size to achieve various sizes too, or use a 3 weight yarn instead of a 4 weight yarn to achieve the same effect.
  • It’s completely customizable, by crocheting the brim in multiples of 10 rows.  This pattern uses a starting brim of 60 rows.

Brim:

The brim is adjustable.  Use the chart on page 5 to help you figure out the best sizing for you.

With (MC), start with a 4.5 – 5 mm hook.

Rows:

  1. Ch 6, hdc in 2nd chain from hook and each chain across (5 hdc)
  2. Ch 1, turn, hdc in 1st stitch, hdc (BLO) in next 3 sts, hdc in last stitch (5 hdc)
  3. Repeat Row 2 until you have 54 rows (will fit adult / teen size head 19 – 20”)

(or until you reach your desired circumference size – make sure it is in multiples or 10 or even numbers and then create increases to reach a multiple of 10)

Join short ends together with a slip stitch, working into the BLO of the front side and both loops on the other side – do not cut the yarn.

Turn inside out so the seam is inside .

Top of Beanie

  • Each repeat is 10 stitches wideYou’ll do 6 repeats of the graph below, once you finish stitch 10 of the graph, you’ll jump back to stitch 1 and keep crocheting around until you complete 6 repeats (60 sts).
  • Graph section works in the round – no seams or chaining.
  • Mark 1st stitch of each round with a stitch marker.

Rounds:

The following rounds are worked into the end of the rows of the brim.

Round 1:  Ch 1, *sc in next 8 sts, inc in next, repeat from * around (60 sc)

Round 2:  WSC in each st from Round 1 – mark 1st stitch

The following and all subsequent rounds are worked in the waistcoat stitch.

Tips for Changing Colors:

  • Changing Colors – Change color by finishing out the last stitch with your new color
  • Carrying or Floating the Yarn – You can carry the colors inside the stitches and bring them up as needed, or float the yarn (my preference because it creates a cleaner look).

Round 3: Begin working Round 3 of the chart (mark the first stitch of each round with a stitch marker – no joins)

Rounds 4 – 25:  Work the chart for rounds 4 – 25 or however tall you’d like your beanie to be.

Tips for size adjusting using different yarns.

  • I worked on this beanie two times.  The first time I was using a thicker yarn and only crocheted 23 rounds high total.
  • Using Woolease yarn I ended up crocheting up to 30 rounds tall and upping the hook size to 6.5 mm.
  • Modify yours accordingly – trying it on and seeing how it fits, just remember to leave enough room to cinch the top.

Once you complete the height you want – as a general rule crown size is measured from base of the brim to the top of the hat and are as follows:

Basic Crown and Hat Heights_2

Leave a 10” tail, cut yarn, thread onto a finishing needle and weave in and out through the top of the stitches, pull tight, then sew the remaining hole together.

Add a pom pom and you’re finished!

(remember to do a swatch or sample of 60 row brim and measure to make sure it fits your head.  I crocheted 54 rows for the brim and did a few increases to get me to 60)
