For this pattern I used three contrasting colors – in orange, heathered black & white. So go ahead and grab any 4-weight yarn and you’ll be good to go!
All About the Yarn…
I went with a few different yarns: (links below in suggested yarn)
- Black Canyon (aff link) by Lion Brand (I like using this because you can actually SEE the stitches)
- Knit Picks – Orange / White (aff link)
Tips for Waistcoat Stitch & Color Change Projects
Here are a few simple tips that will keep your project looking nice and neat.
- Tension – tension is very important using this stitch. Keep it loose.
- You can use a smaller hook for the brim (optional) – This keeps the brim looking neat.
- Use your hook – use the hook to “hook” the right leg of the single crochet to open up the stitch (this is why we crochet it loose) and will let your hook go in easier.
What is the Waistcoat Stitch?
Waistcoat Stitch is so simple! It’s a single crochet stitch, but your hook placement is what makes it different. Place your hook through the center of the V legs in the single crochet stitch instead of the top two loops. That’s it!

PATTERN:
Sizing TIPS:
- The written pattern is made for a head that measures 19 – 23” around. If you want to create a child size hat – the repeat for adult size is 10 stitches wide and repeats 8 times using 5 mm hook
- Adult Modifications: You can modify the adult size by using a 5 or 5.5 mm hook & repeat 9 times to make it larger.
- Child Modifications: You can modify the child size by using a 5 or 5.5 mm hook & repeat 8 times or 7 times for a toddler/baby.
- Increase or decrease hook size to achieve various sizes too, or use a 3 weight yarn instead of a 4 weight yarn to achieve the same effect.
- It’s completely customizable, by crocheting the brim in multiples of 10 rows. This pattern uses a starting brim of 80 rows.
Brim:
The brim is adjustable. Use the chart on page 5 to help you figure out the best sizing for you.
With Black, start with a 4.5 mm hook (decide which hook to use by your personalized measurements – I used a 4.5 mm hook for the brim and it fits my 22” head perfectly snug.
Rows:
- Ch 10, sc in 2nd chain from hook and each chain across (9 sc)
- Ch 1, turn, sc in 1st stitch, sc (BLO) in next 7 sts, sc in last stitch (9 sc)
- Repeat Row 2 until you have 80 rows (will fit adult / teen size head 19 – 20”)
(or until you reach your desired circumference size – make sure it is in multiples or 10 or even numbers and then create increases to reach a multiple of 10)
Join short ends together with a slip stitch, working into the BLO of the front side and both loops on the other side – do not cut the yarn.
Turn inside out so the seam is inside .
Top of Beanie
- Each repeat is 10 stitches wide. You’ll do 8 repeats of the graph below, once you finish stitch 10 of the graph, you’ll jump back to stitch 1 and keep crocheting around until you complete 6 repeats (60 sts).
- Graph section works in the round – no seams or chaining.
- Mark 1st stitch of each round with a stitch marker.

Rounds:
The following round is worked into the end of the rows of the brim.
Round 1 (is ROW 1 of chart): Ch 1, sc in each end of the row, finish with orange – 80 sc.
The following and all subsequent rounds are worked in the waistcoat stitch.
Tips for Changing Colors:
- Changing Colors – Change color by finishing out the last stitch with your new color
- Carrying or Floating the Yarn – You can carry the colors inside the stitches and bring them up as needed, or float the yarn (my preference because it creates a cleaner look).
Round 2: Begin working ROW 2 of the chart below (mark the first stitch of each round with a stitch marker – no joins) WSC in each st from Round 1 – mark 1st stitch
Rounds 3 – 32: Work the chart for rounds 3 – 32 or however tall you’d like your beanie to be – if you’d like to make a slouchy beanie, you can keep going!
Written pattern is below and starts at round 1. Work the chart rounds as directed above.
Tips for size adjusting using different yarns.
- If you use anything other than the suggested yarn, create a swatch and try to match my gauge for stitches using the waistcoat stitch.
- Another tip, create the brim by crocheting as many rows as you need to wrap around your head (remember the stretch – you need to make it 1” – 2” smaller than your head to allow for stretch.
- Modify yours accordingly – trying it on and seeing how it fits, just remember to leave enough room to cinch the top.
Once you complete the height you want – as a general rule crown size is measured from base of the brim to the top of the hat and are as follows:
Leave a 10” tail, cut yarn, thread onto a finishing needle and weave in and out through the top of the stitches, pull tight, then sew the remaining hole together.
Add a pom pom and you’re finished! I use the removable pom poms so you can switch out the colors. You can also sew a button to the inside of your beanie and wrap the elastic from the beanie around the button on the inside.
Written Pattern for Adult Size 80 stitches around
(remember to do a swatch or sample of 80 row brim and measure to make sure it fits your head. I crocheted 80 rows using a 4.5 mm hook)
This pattern is worked in the round – no chaining or joins between rounds – use a stitch marker to mark the 1st stitch of each round.
*** Repeat the stitches between the [brackets] however many times listed. I.e. [Wh x 1, Or x 2, Wh x 4, Or x 3] 7 times
*** Stitch count is 80 throughout.
