How to Crochet a Bookmark in a Few Easy Steps

The X Marks the Spot crochet bookmark pattern tutorial was born as a gift I wanted to create for my boyfriend.

I read…a lot. I love books, and I love bookmarks. It’s somewhat of an obsession really.

My book collection is massive, just like my yarn, and skate collections!

He loves to read too! I picked up a book for him, laid this inside, and wrapped it in gold tissue paper.

It felt really good to give a handmade gift for a passion we both love.

In This Post you will Learn…

This crochet bookmark pattern tutorial is extremely easy to crochet and I added a few weaving techniques in there just to give it a little flare.

  • How to crochet a bookmark.
  • Weaving through holes (not rocket science LOL!, but I’m trying to fill this space with something that sounds cool because this pattern is so easy!) 🤣

I created a full video on how to work this crochet bookmark pattern in this easy tutorial.

Check it out on YouTube: X Marks the Spot Crochet Bookmark Pattern Tutorial or jump to the tutorial at the bottom of the page.

+ Braids:

Using a complimentary color, chain 100 – 120 chains. Make sure the chain you create is about twice as long as the chain on the top of your bookmark – see video for help on this if you need it.

+ Assembly:

Using a darning needle, attach to the starting end of the long chain you just created. Then weave through as follows, creating an X pattern (video goes into more detail for this as well).

You want all the length of all three chains to match, before you start braiding. Therefore you can drop some chains or chain more until they are the same length.

Make sure the braids are all the same length.

Sew the three braids together, wrap the yarn around and weave through to secure it and create a tassel.

Leave a 1.5″ – 2″ tail.

+ Finishing:

To finish, I added a picot stitch border to the bottom of the bookmark. It’s simple little pattern and easy to make. Picots can be a little frustrating, but gentle patience works.

So use, the same yarn color as the main part of your bookmark – flip bookmark so bottom RS is up. Insert hook in rightmost stitch and attach your yarn…

Row 1: *Ch 3, insert hook in 1st ch, yo, pull up a loop, slip stitch through, insert hook in next stitch, yo, pull up a loop and slip stitch, repeat from * across – 4 picot sts.

Weave in all tails

Congratulations! You Are Finished!

Notes

When creating bookmarks, you can use a 2 weight yarn too. The thinner the yarn the better. These are actually a little thick, but they still turned out great! Try making these using a 2 weight yarn and work a few extra rows to see how they turn out!
