How to Crochet: Pique Stitch | Video Tutorial for Beginners | Stitch Explorer Series

The stitch explorer series is a series of stitch tutorial videos I am creating to share with my students, and everyone on the interwebs! You can come back to this link and explore the rest of the stitches, there is so much to learn!

This is the third of five stitches we are going to learn leading up to creating the coolest 5 stitch project ever! The first stitch to learn is the alternating spike stitch, and you can check that out that tutorial by clicking here. The second stitch is the Open Ridge stitch and you can find that tutorial here.

I kind of want to call this the yarn over stitch because there are so many yarn overs! lol

On to number 3! The Pique Stitch…

This stitch uses two basic stitches in a one row repeat. The half double crochet & the double crochet. The pattern goes as follows:

+ Abbreviations

pspique stitch
hdchalf double crochet
fhdcfoundation half double crochet
yoyarn over

+ Stitch Guide:

hdc – half double crochet

yo, insert hook in indicated st, yo, draw up a loop, yo, draw through all three loops on hook.

ps – pique stitch

yo, insert hook in indicated stitch. yo, draw up a loop. yo, draw through 2 loops. yo, insert hook in same stitch. yo, draw up a loop. yo, draw through 1 loop. yo, draw through the remaining 4 loops on your hook. 1 pique stitch created.

fhdc – foundation half double crochet

step 1:  create a slip knot, ch 3, yo, insert hook in first ch, yo, draw up a loop, ch 1, yo, draw through all three loops on hook.  step 2:  yo, insert hook in bottom two loops of ch 1 created in step 1.  yo, draw up a loop, ch 1, yo, draw through all three loops on hook (2 fhdc created) – repeat step 2 until you reach desired number of sts.

Chain any number of chains –

or create a foundation half double crochet row to start – I recommend the fhdc row because this stitch gets puffy – and the chain draws in at the bottom with a regular chain – or you can go up a hook size or two just to create the chain.

chain any number of chains (for fhdc pattern, see below

Row 1:

hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each chain across.

Row 2:

ch 3, turn. hdc in 1st st (at base of chain). ps 1 in each st across.

Repeat row 2 until you reach the desired height for your project.

If you want to create it with a foundation hdc…

Rfdhc any number of stitches.

Row 1: repeat Row 2 from above until you reach your desired height.

If you are a visual learner, like I know I am, the video tutorial is below. Please take a moment to subscribe to my channel if you’d like to see all the stitch explorer videos. I’ll be premiering one every Saturday – forever (at least that’s the plan)! You can click on the subscribe button below 🙂

What should I make with the Pique Stitch?

This is a great stitch to use for making just about anything from scarves to cardigans. It creates a fairly thick fabric, and has a beautiful look to it both horizontally and vertically.

I hope you enjoy this tutorial, and if you have any questions or comments, please leave them below, I would love to talk crochet!
