Melange Flower Blanket Square Pattern

All About the Yarn…

Caron Cinnamon Swirl comes in so many fun colors.  I used Springtime because I love the brightness of the spring colors.  I separated out the sections into individual balls and worked with those to create the color changes in this square.

Gather your supplies…

Materials & Notions

Suggested Yarn:   Caron Cinnamon Swirl Cakes in Springtime 100% Acrylic, 372 yds (340m), 8 oz (227g).

Yardage Needed:  Approximately 12-15 yards using the recommended yarn.

Gauge:

14 Sts x 13 Rows = 4” x 4” (10 x 10 cm) approx.

Sizes / Finished Measurements:

Dimensions:   6″ (15.24 cm)  tall x 6″ (15.24 cm) wide (blocked).

Abbreviations

  • Ch (s) – Chain (s)
  • Sc – Single crochet
  • Sl st – Slip stitch
  • St (s) – Stitch(s)
  • *  – Repeat from * as many times indicated.
  • Yo – Yarn over
  • Hdc – Half double crochet
  • Stdc – Stacked Double Crochet
  • Puff(s) – Puff stitch(es)

Stitch guide:

Sc – Single Crochet

Insert hook in indicated stitch, yo, draw up a loop, yo, draw through both loops on hook.

Hdc – Half Double Crochet

Yo, insert hook in indicated stitch, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull loop through three loops on hook.

Special Stitches:

StdcStacked Double Crochet

Insert hook in indicated stitch, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through both loops on hook (1 sc created), *insert hook in left vertical bar of sc just created, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through both loops, repeat from * one more time.

Puff – Puff Stitch

*Yo, insert hook in indicated stitch, yo, pull up a loop (to the length of your hook), repeat from * one more time, yo, pull through all but one loop, yo, pull through the last 2 loops on hook – 1 puff created.

Notes:

  • Pattern works in the round.
  • Joins are made with a slip stitch unless otherwise noted.

PATTERN:

Create a magic circle.

  • Round 1 (C1):  1 stdc and 7 dc into the ring, join – 8 dc.
  • Round 2 (C2):  Ch 1, 1 stdc, ch 1, dc in the same stitch, (dc, ch 1, dc) in next st, repeat from * 7 more times, join – 16 dc, 8 ch-1.
  • Round 3 (C3): Ch 1, sc in same st, *(puff, ch 1, puff)** in next ch-1 space, sc in next dc, repeat from *6 more times, end repeat at**, join in first sc – 8 sc, 16 puffs, 8 ch-1. 
  • Round 4 (C4): Ch 3 (does not count as stitch), 3 puffs in same space, ch 1, hdc in ch-1 space, ch 1, *(3 puffs in next sc, ch 1, hdc in next ch-1 space, ch 1) repeat from * 6 more times, join in first puff – 24 puffs, 8 hdc, 16 ch-1.
  • Round 5 (C5):  Ch 1, hdc in the same space, hdc in each stitch/chain around (working into two loops of the chains, not around the chain) join in first hdc  – 48 hdc. 
  • Round 6 (C3): Ch 2, (hdc 3, ch 1, hdc 3) in same as join, hdc in each of next 11 hdc, *(hdc 3, ch 1, hdc 3) in next hdc, hdc in each of next 11 hdc, repeat from * 2 more times join in first hdc (mark that slip stitch) –  67 hdc. 
  • Round 7 (C1):  Sl st in each of the next 2 hdc, sl st in ch-1 space, ch 1, (sc 1, ch 2, sc 1)  in ch-2 space. Sc in next 7 sts, sc 2 in next st, sc in each of next 8 sts.  *(sc 1, ch 2, sc 1)  in ch-2 space. Sc in next 8 sts, sc 2 in next st, sc in each of next 8 sts. Repeat from * 2 more times – 79 sc, 4 ch-2 spaces.

Tie off and weave in all tails.

Finishing

Remember to block your square. I used a blocking matt and a steam blocker, but you can wet it and shape it to 6″ to create your perfect measurements.

  1. Rnd 7, says “(sc, Ch2, sc) into Ch2”. What C2 sp? I cannot find it in Rnd 6. Is it in a rnd below?Pretty square, I really want to make it, and make it correctly Thank you
