The crowd has spoken! Thanks for the wonderful response to this pattern on my Facebook Reels – with over 60K views! So many people asked for the pattern, so here it is! In this post you will learn how to create an easy tunisian crochet washcloth using two colors.
Inspiration Behind the Pattern
Tunisian crochet seems to elude people because it uses a special hook (sometimes) – so I always want to demonstrate just how easy Tunisian crochet is and make it less scary.
I fell in LOVE with Tunisian crochet back in 2017 when I came across Toni Lipsi’s tutorials on YouTube and started immediately designing my own Tunisian crochet patterns (seen below).
Here are a few of the fun pattern Tunisian crochet patterns in my crochet pattern library. Once you have your bearings and feel more comfortable with it. Come back here and make more!

What is Tunisian Crochet?
Tunisian crochet is also known as Afghan crochet because it uses a long hook, and the Tunisian Simple Stitch works wonders for graphghans.
Subsequently, this technique creates a unique fabric that has a woven, knit-like appearance. There are a variety of Tunisian crochet stitches out there and the fabric is often very thick.
Unlike traditional crochet, Tunisian crochet works with multiple loops on the hook on the same time. Similar to knitting. It’s sometimes referred to as “cro-knit” too.
However, I’ve discovered for small projects, you can actually use a traditional crochet hook – one without an ergonomic handle – just a plain old smooth crochet hook.

Stitch Guide:
tss – Tunisian Simple Stitch
The starting row is worked slightly different than row 2 of the Tunisian Simple Stitch.
Row 1:
FwP: Chain any number of chains. Insert hook in 2nd ch from hook and pull up a loop. *insert hook in next chain and pull up a loop. Repeat from *across the entire chain.
RetP: Yo, pull up a loop. Ch 1. **Yo, pull through two loops. Repeat from ** across until one loop remains on your hook.
Row 2:
FwP: Insert hook in second vertical bar from hook (not the one directly under your loop), and pull up a loop. End stitch: Insert hook into two vertical strands of the last stitch, and pull up a loop.
RetP: Ch 1. *Yo, pull through two loops. Repeat from * back to the beginning of your row (1 loop left on hook)
Sc – Single Crochet
Insert hook in indicated stitch, yo, pull up a loop, yo and pull through both loops.
Notes:
- Maintain your tension – especially in the first few rows.
- The first few rows will curl – use a larger hook size for the first row to remedy that, or just a tad looser tension to start.
- Practice makes progress! Learning something new is a challenge, but don’t give up.
EASY TUNISIAN SIMPLE STITCH WASHCLOTH PATTERN:
PATTERN:
With (C1) chain any number wide you’d like.
For the Rainbow washcloth, I chained 29 and completed 25 rows.
UPDATE: I created another one for my daughter that I love even more! So for this one, my starting chain is 33 and I completed 30 rows. Then added another row of single crochet’s for the border. Then I worked a foundation single crochet of 10 (to make a loop) then joined and weaved in the tails. What do you think?
For the Pink Ombre washcloth, I chained 25 and completed 22 rows.
Mine are slightly rectangle shaped.
Row 1: (C1) FwP, join (C2) for the RetP
Row 2: (C2) FwP, pull up (C1) for the RetP
Rows 3 – X: Continue repeating Rows 1 & 2, end repeat with Row 1 (make sure white is the color on your hook, so when you create the border, it will be white.
Border:
Once you complete your final row, Side 1: Sc into the 2nd vertical bar and in each vertical bar across. Sc 2 into the corner. Side 2: Sc in each row along the side. Sc 2 in the corner. Side 3: Sc in each vertical bar across. Sc 2 in the corner. Side 4: Sc in each row along the side. Sc 1 in the corner, join.
