The inspiration for these cast covers is my little grand-baby! He loves Spiderman, and I thought I would make him these spiderman crochet cast covers after he had surgery. He was born with Spina Bifida.
A little bit about Spina Bifida…it’s a neural tube defect that affects approximately 1 in 1000 babies. Somewhere along the line (around 4 weeks in the womb), the skin fails to close along the spinal column and it the spinal cord, along with all the nerves begin pooling in a thin membrane and grow on the outside of the body (sounds more horrible than it actually is, I assure you!) #spinabifidawarrior
What normally happens after birth, is a surgery is performed to tuck everything back inside, and close the hole (that’s the simple part). The hard part is it causes paralysis, bowel, bladder, and other hurdles, like hydrocephalus, where brain fluid pools in the ventricles of the brain.
Long story short – Lil S has it all! He had a shunt placed 3 days after he was born. To date, he has endured 4 surgeries and the lil guy is only 3.5 years old.
His most recent surgery was to thin out the tendons in his ankles because his feet were atrophied into a pointing position, which was preventing him from walking. He is paralyzed from just below his knees to his feet (he got lucky!) Sometimes it can be so much worse. Despite having the worst kind of Spina Bifida, he is blessed with movement of his knees :D.
He keeps me running…
He is a trooper and so strong! He’s also happy, smart, and loves superheroes. He also loves when I take him to the skate park, and we ride the ramps together! (I’m a cool gamma right?) :).

It was still pretty cold here when the surgery was performed, and he LOVES Spiderman. So I decided to whip him up some Spidey cast covers.
There is nothing stopping him now from becoming a web slinger now!
I realized after I already pieced this pattern together, that I may have sewn the eyes on up-side-down! lol. But hey, it’s all okay.

Gauge:
These Spiderman crochet cast covers are a DIY to fit your custom. I used the yarn & hook size below and measured around the cast to get my circumference.
Materials:
Suggested Yarn:
Any 4 weight yarn – I used Amore Yarn by Red Heart in the colors, Rooibos, Chamomile, Black, and Serene
Colors:
A: Roobios (red), B: Chamomile (white), C: Black, D: Serene (blue)
Suggested Yarn Details:
50% Superwash Merino Wool, 25% Micro, 25% Acrylic – 50 grams = 105 m
Yardage Needed:
Less than 1 skein of each (for toddler size), you may need more of the red if you are making an older child cast cover.
Hook Size: 5.0mm (H), 5.5 mm (I-9)

sc – single crochet
insert hook in indicated st, yo, draw up a loop, yo draw through both loops on hook.
dc – double crochet
yo, insert hook in indicated st, yo, draw up a loop, *yo, draw through 2 loops* – repeat from * to * until you have one loop left on the hook.
yo, insert hook in indicated st, yo, draw up a loop, yo, draw through all three loops on hook.
fsc – foundation single crochet
create a slip knot. ch 2, insert hook in 1st chain. yo, draw up a loop. ch 1, yo, draw through both loops on hook. (2nd st) insert hook in bottom two loops of ch 1, yo draw up a loop. ch 1, yo, draw through both loops (2 fsc created).

Finished Measurements:
This pattern sizing is based on your own measurements. I created these for a toddler, so they measured around 4” wide (8” diameter), enough to fit around his cast, and about 8 – 10″ tall.
- Main body of covers are worked in continuous rounds.
- Eyes are created separately and sewn on.
- Webbing is created by sewing it to the cast cover.
- Measure the circumference & height of the casts you are working with.
Pattern:
Cast Cover – Make 2
with Rooibos (red) yarn and a 5.5 mm (I-9) hook
Chain any number of stitches to create proper circumference for your measurements, then join – or – (keep stretch in mind, so make it 1” or 2” smaller. You can chain or use a foundation single crochet for this project.
Row 1: Fsc as many needed to meet your measurements.
Row 2: Join foundation/chain with slip stitch into first st/ch of beginning of row 1.
Rows 3 – X: ch 1 (mark with stitch marker – you will leave it in until the end). sc in each stitch around, working continuously until you reach your desired height.
When you reach your desired height make sure you end your last st in line with the stitch marker you placed when you began. Then, secure and weave in tails. Do not sew bottom yet.
Spiderman Crochet Cast Cover – Eyes – Make 2 or 4 – it’s up to you!
Using 5 mm (H) hook, and Chamomile (white)
note I’m spacing the instructions on separate lines for easier reading.
To start – ch 9
I created these rounds as a list because it is easier read and keep track of them.
Rnd 1:
- dc in 3rd ch from hook,
- dc 1 in each of next 2 sts,
- hdc 1 in each of next 2 sts,
- sc 1 in each of next 2 sts,
- (you’ll be at end of chain now),
- sc 2 in same as last sc,
- sc 1 in each of next 2 sts (you’ll be working around other side of chain now),
- hdc 1 in each of next 2 sts,
- dc 1 in each of next 2 sts,
- dc 1 in same as last dc.
Change to black by drawing it up as new color with a slip stitch: make join in two loops of chain from beginning of round.
Rnd 2:
With Black yarn…ch 1,
- hdc in same as join,
- hdc 1 in each of next 4 sts,
- sc 1 in each of next 3 sts,
- sl st into next 2 sts,
- sc 1 in each of next 3 sts,
- hdc 1 in each of next 4 sts,
- hdc 1 in same as last hdc,
- sl st into first hdc of round.
leave long black tail (at least 15”) for sewing to main piece
weave in all other tails
Assembly & Spider webbing:
Place cast covers with seam in the back, top side farthest away from you and position the eyes in a 45-degree angle about 1.5” (3.8 cm) from top, and where you think it looks most like Spidey 😊.
Begin sewing using a whip stitch. Leave a small opening to add stuffing, add the stuffing to puff the eyes up a bit, and finish sewing the eyes to the cast cover body.
The spider webbing…Let me tell you, this was my first-time creating webbing. Live and learn right! The easiest way I can suggest doing this is with a needle and black yarn, insert your hand inside the cast cover and find the center between the eyes, bring the yarn up through that position, and create a center line to the top of the cover, as pictured below. I then went around (the back side of this is *not* pretty, lol) and insert my needle into the center points. I eye balled Spidey’s web design and copied it as best I could!

I did the best I could! It’s not perfect, but maybe someone out there has tips on how to do webbing better than I do! <3.

When you complete the spiderweb, go ahead and sew the bottom of the covers up by first, turning it inside out, then whip stitch the bottom together using the Rooibos yarn.
I only added the face to one of the covers, but it is up to you! You can make two identical or even do just another web on the other cover.
I also added a stripe of blue to the sides of one of the covers by laying it flat, then inserting my hook in the bottom-most right-hand corner, then…
work a single crochet around each row until you reach the height you like.
I know these aren’t perfect to say the least, but they were fun to make, and I hope you enjoy making them too 😊.
